Richard Howell develops a theology of gender identity based on the mutual indwelling nature of the Triune God and the self-giving love of the crucified Christ. He identifies the way forward as the pursuit and preservation of distinct gender identities in self-giving interdependence with one another.

Although masculine and feminine metaphors are used to describe God, God is beyond gender, which is a biological and cultural aspect of creaturely identity. As we see in Gen. 2, humans are created in an irreducible duality of male and female. Though the content of masculinity and femininity may vary, the marks are inalienable.

The equality of men and women in Christ (Gal. 3:28) does not entail that one gender is transformed into another or blended into a synthesis. Instead, gender distinction grounds the interdependence of women and men. In the Body of Christ, service is a celebration of this interdependence.
