Detailed Description

Why was the name of the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews lost so early in its history? This scholarly examination of a long-debated New Testament mystery argues convincingly that a woman was the author of “Hebrews.” Tracking down every clue, and developing a convincing line of reasoning, Ruth Hoppin contends that Priscilla—a woman who was a leader in the early church and an associate of Paul—is ultimately the only “suspect” who meets all the qualifications for authorship.

Hoppin reexamines, in great depth, the suggestion, originally voiced by the German scholar Adolph von Harnack in 1900, that the Letter to the Hebrews had been written by Paul’s friend and companion, Priscilla. From an internal analysis of the letter and from confirming data of apostolic times, Hoppin comes to the conclusion that von Harnack must be right.

ENDORSEMENTS

“A well researched defense of Priscilla’s authorship of Hebrews ... my inclination is to regard Priscilla as the most likely candidate ... female authorship of this extraordinary document enables us to account for the (increasingly patriarchal) church actually forgetting the author’s name as perhaps no other theory of authorship will.”— Christopher Bryan, Professor of New Testament, School of Theology
